With no experience, here are five ways to get started copywriting and build a portfolio. 

When you're just beginning started as a copywriter and you're out in the marketplace looking for gigs and clients, one of the most typical inquiries you'll get is:

Do you have any samples of your work that you can share with me?"
Can you show me your portfolio?

Well, I don't have a portfolio, you can say,

I'm brand new, and I'm just getting started, if you're brand new.

Well, then we can't really trust you, your prospects will say. We can't really hire you, they'll say.

So, how am I going to put together a portfolio when I'm fresh new?

So I can't get any gigs because I don't have a portfolio, but I also can't create one because I can't get any gigs. I completely understand your dissatisfaction.

The dilemma is whether you'll let the lack of materials and a portfolio deter you from pursuing a professional, lucrative copywriting career.

Today, I'll show you five different strategies to get started with copywriting. Start by getting your foot in the door.

Some people may need to take one, two, or even three no-pay or low-pay gigs to get started. I'm not asking you to do it for the rest of your life; all I ask is that you get two or three samples.

That's all there is to it. You need to get your foot in the door, get your foot in the game, so you can start being paid right away, and that's how you do it. Let's get it in there.

One of the best things you can do is volunteer to write for a non-profit organisation. Non-profit organisations are always on the lookout for writers to contribute to their newsletters, press releases, fundraising efforts, and emails. 

I'm referring to your local Parent Teacher Association, animal shelters, and environmental organisations.

Simply send them an email with the subject line "Hey, you know what?

"I'm a copywriter who wants to expand my experience." You might add them to your LinkedIn network. Yes, you can find me on LinkedIn. All you have to do now is approach them. After you write for them, one of these three things will happen.

The first is:

It demonstrates to potential clients that you are a decent person because they can see you write for a non-profit in your work samples.

You're probably a nice person. I'm assuming you are, correct?

You're a decent individual.

The second is:

If you genuinely produce excellent work, they might become a paying client. They are so impressed with your work that they will engage you for future tasks. 

There's a chance they'll make a suggestion, a referral, or an endorsement for you. Expect neither an endorsement nor a recommendation.

If you get it, that's great, but that's not why you're doing it. You're doing it to bolster your resume.

That makes sense, right?

If you belong to a church or any other religious organisation, you might contact them because they are always searching for writers to help spread the word.

It's a lot easier for them to say yes and give you some gigs and practise opportunities when you approach them as one of the believers.


The third is:

Make contact with business owners. That's exactly what I did at the start of my profession. 

Hey, do you need any kind of brochures?

As I approached local business owners and chamber of commerce members, I'd ask them questions.

Maybe it's your advertisements, maybe it's your direct mail?

Is there anything I could write?" "Your landing page, your email, right?

Your landing page, your email, totally correct?

Anything they might require assistance with. All I'm asking is for the business owner to approve my work and grant me permission to exhibit it to other potential customers in the future.

That's all there is to it, and most of the time they'll say yes since, first and foremost, they'd save money.

And second, they're always seeking for marketing, materials, and literature for their enterprises. It's pretty simple, and once I've completed a couple, I've got a portfolio.

The fourth is:

Consider taking an online course. I conduct a seven-week certification course that teaches people how to become high-earning copywriters.

And we'll give them homework tasks every week. So, by the conclusion of the seven weeks, you'll have a portfolio of various examples of your work.

Emails, landing pages, and advertisements that you can send to potential customers. That's why, based on the strength of the portfolio they built during those seven weeks of just doing the assignments, my students can get clients in as little as seven weeks.

Yes, that has occurred! I finally received my first boom. I hadn't even completed the curriculum yet; we only ended class six two days ago, and I already had my first boom. 

Wow, what an incredible sensation. I think it's incredible that I was able to create $1,000 with a cash net. I only spent 20 minutes of my time to earn $1,000, and she paid me $100 in commission (10%), which makes me very happy.

I'm starting to believe in myself. I finally got my first boom, and it's official! And it's $100; I'm overjoyed that I've finally gotten it, and I worked hard for it with my soul.

You rewrite other people's content. So you go through many landing pages, funnels, and emails, and you steal their copy and rework it, and that becomes your portfolio.

Now, don't lie; you're not stating that these people are your clients, or that these firms are your clients; you're simply telling them that these are examples of your work, or what you could be able to do.

Now they could see, now they could get a peek of what they could do.


This is how good your writing is, and these are your skillsets. It's a really straightforward procedure.

You no longer require 20, 30, or more samples of your work in your portfolio. Only two or three people are required. A perplexed mind, a perplexed prospect, will always say no.

As time passes and you accumulate additional samples in your portfolio, you'll want to send them exactly what they're looking for. Here's what I'm talking about.

Let's pretend they want to hire you to compose their emails.

So, what exactly do you do?

You send them two or three email examples from previous jobs. They want you to write some landing pages for them. You show them two or three samples of landing pages.

When they ask for landing pages, you don't want to show them emails.

So, as you get more gigs, you may have a lot more examples in your portfolio that you could exhibit, but you don't, right?

Let me add one more bonus tip to the mix. Is there anything else you want to know about this? When you're speaking with a potential client, don't emphasise on your history or lack of experience.

After all, the prospect isn't very interested in your writing. What they want to know is what has to be done and how your writing can help them with their enterprises.

That's all there is to it, so concentrate on them. When you call them, and I advocate calling them, you get them on the phone after the initial chat, after the initial email or social media exchange, and you ask them smart questions.

You figure out what they require. You figure out exactly what they're seeking for in terms of a result. Then you position your top-rated service as the path to their destination.
